With all the University of Texas schools, it can be hard to decide which college is the best based on the online degree programs offered. That is why having a summary of what each school is about and what benefits you can gain from attending them can be beneficial.

The University of Texas at Austin (UT) has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1883. Since the day UT was founded, they have increased their policies to include diversity, equality, and support for the students and faculty that attend. They are well known for their sports team, The Longhorns, and have a football team that has attended three national football championships, with a win in 2005.

The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) was founded in 1895. With a campus that stretches 420 acres, UTA has state-of-the-art labs, a clean room in a nanofab lab, kilns for the glass-blowing studios, and a neonatal intensive care unit part of the Smart Hospital. They have a sports team called Movin’ Mavs, their wheelchair basketball team for both men and women. The Movin’ Mavs have won a national championship in both 2016 and 2018.

The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) was designed by Eugene McDermott, J. Erik Jonsson, and Cecil Green after they observed young Texans leaving to attend higher education in other states due to their company, Texas Instruments, recruiting out-of-state talents to work at the headquarters in Dallas, Tx. Their mission was to create a better opportunity in North Texas by establishing the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest (GRCSW). UTD is well known for its chess team. The University of Texas at Dallas chess has been a top contender on the collegiate chess circuit since 1996 and has been a participant in the Final Four Collegiate Chess Tournament.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), once the Texas State School of Miners and Metallurgy, opened in 1914. Unfortunately, when a fire demolished the campus in 1916, just two years later, the University was forced to move to its current location in El Paso. UTEP is known as the Miners because most assumed that the school was originally founded as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy.  

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) was named by Frank Lombardino after learning his original name was already filed in 1966. The University of Texas at San Antonio was then approved by the Texas House of Representatives following authorization from the Senate in 1969, making it the first institute signed by a governor outside of Austin. With the mascot of a Roadrunner, UTSA’s athletic department has 17 different sports teams. UTSA Roadrunners have three conference commissioner cups for best athletic performance and over 70 league championships. They have hosted 18 NCAA Championships, including the 2021 Women’s Final Four and soon-to-be 2025 Men’s Final Four.

The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) is a graduate school home to 259 acres was founded in 1971. With six academic colleges, UT Tyler is the only institution in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in human resource development. Known as the Patriots, they have an extensive list of accreditations and offer a wide range of sports and close to 100 student organizations. Nursing is one of UT Tyler’s top ten majors, and the Patriots are one of the newest members of the NCAA.

The University of Texas Permian Basin (UT Permian) is known as the “academic heart of West Texas” and is the childhood home to former President George W. Bush. They also have one of the largest heated outdoor pools in West Texas and a great facsimile of Stonehenge located right on their campus. They have a variety of sports for both men and women.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), created by the Legislature in 2013, became the first major public University in the 21^st century in Texas. This gave way to great opportunities for expanding the education for the Rio Grande Valley, such as the School of Medicine. This school helps contribute support to the other Universities of Texas in the surrounding area. With the Vaquero mascot, they have a coed cheer team and a dance and mascot team. They have a range of different events and student activities that help include the diversity within its students to help make them feel welcome and develop a sense of belonging.
